Pupils Go Gold!

11 of our Upper Sixth have spent four years working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. To gain the award each pupil has had to dedicate six months to a new sport, 12 months volunteering, six months learning a new skill, take part in an unaccompanied expedition and hold a presentation on their plight to gain the Gold award.

On Friday 12 March the pupils ticked off their presentation requirements and held an assembly detailing their adventures on Snowdonia and their 50 mile hike over four days! The group were unaccompanied for this expedition and had to carry rucksacks containing all of their clothing, wet weather clothing, their tent, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, head torches, medical kits, food, plenty of water and, of course, pots and pans for cooking! Before they started their trek they spent the morning at an activity camp and enjoyed high rope walking as part of a bonding session. The group was then split into two teams who worked their way in opposite directions. All completed the expedition and found their way back to the minibus where they celebrated with some well deserved champagne and chocolate! Both teams commented ‘we had a great time. Physically and mentally it was a huge challenge but we all had the experience of a lifetime!’

Congratulations to all who have worked so hard over the last four years. William and Catherine have completed all sections required for the prestigious gold award and the rest of the group will complete over the next few weeks! Awards are expected to be handed out later this year, either by the Duke of Edinburgh himself, or by Prince William.
